the frozen moment

Contribution on the 6th international ceramics biennial 2009, Kapfenberg (AT)

Only few instants in time obtain a meaning that makes them, as such, objectively graspable for many. Those are powerful eruptions of nature like earthquakes and storms, sudden events such as assassinations or moon landings. Those moments are self-explanatory and do not need any artistic conservation. In people´s daily routines, only those particles of time reach the status of "moments" that are conected to personal events, impressions, sceneries. Life includes a succession of uncountable moments of which only a few are important enough to be realised as such.

"Everything is in flux", there is no standstill but yet life isn´t a monotonous repetition of the same. Coldness decelerates motion toward solidification and opens up a timeslot that sems to allow you to hold on to any instant in life. Yet this attempt only seems successful in the beginning: the penguins do not stand motionless, they move in circles and thereby resist eternal solidification and cold. The course of the sun paints them in different shades of light. The frozen moment represents failure. This moment in time cannot be represented. It is arbitrary and of importance only to the individual.
